Details on the Xbox Game Pass Service
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:52:34 PM »

Today, Microsoft has announced a new service that will be coming to the Xbox One later this year called the Xbox Game Pass. For $9.99 a month subscribers will get access to a catalogue of over 100 titles from various publishers. Each title gives access to the full digital version of the game, no streaming of the content. Gold is still required for multiplayer access though. Current companies signed up to participate are: 2K, 505 Games, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Capcom, Codemasters, Deep Silver, Focus Home Interactive, SEGA, SNK CORPORATION, THQ Nordic GmbH, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Microsoft Studios. Both Xbox One and 360 backwards compatible titles will be available through the service. Gold members will get early access, but this will also be open to Silver members.

The Xbox Game Pass will be a rotating catalogue with some cycling in and out of the system. As an additional perk, subscribing members can purchase any game currently in the catalogue for 20% off, with DLC also receiving a 10% discount. If at any time your subscription is cancelled all games you have not purchased will no longer be available.

If you are part of the Xbox Insider Program Alpha ring then this service may be open to you right now. A limited number of titles are being offered to test the service out early. There is no official list of games available, but it appears to be mostly 360 games at the moment. The current planned release for all Xbox players will be some time in Spring 2017.

Sounds like an interesting way to get players hooked on a few games and then yank the carrot when it's time to rotate to the next set of games.

In order for this to have any measure of success, the catalogue needs to have popular AAA games that people want to play.

Interesting note to this, after this announcement Gamestop's stock took an 8% dip yesterday.

I am in the alpha ring and to get access I had to go into the insider app and find my access to it. Interesting note for those of you that game share, this service applies to game sharing as well. So $5 a month for access to the games? That's a deal to me.

Microsoft launched early access to Game Pass for all Gold members yesterday allowing players to purchase a full month or start a 14 day trial. The service will officially launch on June 1st with Silver members getting the same options. The Game Pass hub can be found here, while you can see the full list of games on the Xbox One store itself.
